“Goin’ Home”

Remember Dorothy’s Quote?“There’s no place like home” (Wizard of Oz)—

  • “(Dorothy): Oh, but anyway, Toto, we’re home. Home! And this is my room, and you’re all here. And I’m not gonna leave here ever, ever again, because I love you all, and – oh, Auntie Em – there’s no place like home!”

And There are Other Popular Quotes

  • “Peace, like charity, begins at home.’
  • “Home is a shelter from storms—all sorts of storms.”
  • “No matter who you are or where you are, instinct tells you to go home.”
  • “Home is the nicest word there is.”

  • Riley O’Hagan (20, UH student-athlete)

“Yes, I’m one those ‘homesick’ daughters who just had to travel the Pacific Ocean and across the mainland U.S. during this past busy holiday season to visit Mom and Dad in my home town, Virginia Beach, VA.  Actually, this trip was my first one home since I left three-years ago.  My full-time studies and Beach Volleyball schedule here at UH left very little ‘vacation time’ for visiting the folks.”

“I’ve got to say this – ‘As much as I loved every moment spent with family and close friends while in Virginia Beach, now that I’m back here in Hawaii (and Manoa), I actually feel like ‘Hawaii IS Home’.  My close family now are my teammates and fellow students.’  Oh, I hasten to add—there’s also this local guy (KALANI THOMPSON, MS Candidate, Architecture) … and yes, things look pretty serious with us!!!

“I really don’t know who penned this quote; but maybe…  IT IS TRUE; HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS’!!!

  • Shirley Kalei Simao (66, retired real-estate broker)

“I have to totally agree with Riley— “Home is where the heart is.”  I left my safe-haven Paradise in Makaha Valley on the West Side of Oahu Island six years ago and relocated with my husband (RANDY) to Pahrump, Nevada to assist our daughter and two little ones.  My son-in-law was in construction, and his company had just won a major housing development project there in the Vegas area.  Great opportunity for them, but they still needed mine and my husband’s help caring for the two grandchildren, at least until the children were ready for school.”

“The change with family worked out fantastically well until 2020 and the COVID PANDEMIC!!!  Work slowdown; health problems; and general frustration for everyone caused re-evaluation of our current family arrangement… prompting the need for change.  Randy and I decided it was best for us to return to our home in Hawaii (we had rented our ocean-front residence during our absence).  As you can imagine, it was a painful decision for everyone; however, it was “PONO”, as we say in Hawaiian.”

“So, now that we’re back here in Makaha Beach, and perhaps, like…  DOROTHY SAID: THERE’ NO PLACE LIKE HOME’!!!”

  • Wally “TOP” Kekuewa (72, U.S. Army retired)

“It’s really difficult for me to give my 2-cents worth about— ‘GOIN’ HOME’.  You know, after 30-years in this Man’s Army, I uttered that phrase countless times after all of my overseas deployments—Vietnam, Germany, Afghanistan, Iraq, Bahrain.  ‘Goin’ Home’ to family waiting for me at Ft. Ord, CA, or Ft. Lewis, WA, Ft. Knox, KY, and, of course, home in Honolulu, HI…  I GOIN’ HOME’!!!

“All fond and nostalgic memories; however, my happiest (yet, most heart-wrenching) ‘Goin’ Home’ recollection was after my first Vietnam tour—it was 1974, and my unit was being sent back to Schoefield Barracks in Honolulu.  Cease fire was declared and the United States ended its military commitment to the South Vietnamese Government and its people.  It was a sad ending for us who had risked life and family in support of a U.S. Ally.”

“So, “’GOIN’ HOME from the war zone in 1974 still elicits heart-breaks for me…  Nonetheless, the memory of eagerly searching the throng of ‘Welcome Home’ revelers, hoping to finally reach out to that 20-year-old bride I left almost a year ago earlier, still haunts me.”
